Backyard Birds Update

After a quiet autumn at backyard feeders, the birds are finally returning to feeders to take advantage of available seed and suet offerings. The resident chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, and cardinals are supplementing the natural seeds with sunflower seed from our feeders. The numbers of goldfinch are increasing at the thistle feeders as they fight for position at the feeding ports. There have been scattered reports of pine siskins, so look for these birds at the thistle feeders as well.

Juncos are back, feeding on millet under the feeders along with a few white-throated and white- crowned sparrows. The wintering tree sparrows are also back, sporting their rusty cap and the dot on

their clear breast.

In addition to the woodpeckers at our suet feeders, we are seeing more visits by the nuthatches and titmice to the suet. The beef fat gives a quick energy boost to birds during the cold weather!

Time to plug in your heated bird bath or to put those heated deicers in your summer bird bath. The birds love having water available in the frigid weather.

In-The-Field Update

Snowy owls and short-eared owls have been seen in Salisbury and on Plum Island already. Please remember to be respectful of these northern visitors and keep your distance so as not to stress them.

Snow buntings and Horned Larks have been flocking on our local beaches and coastal marshes.

A rough-legged hawk was seen on Plum Island. Eiders, scoters, long-tailed ducks, loons and grebes are migrating onto our ocean waters for the winter. Many can be seen close to shore with binoculars or a scope.

Bald eagles have been seen on Plum Island and upriver on the Merrimack. As the temperature continues to drop, more bald eagles will be seen fishing in the Merrimack & Parker Rivers. In the meantime, keep checking the skies for a migrating golden eagle!
